Central Oregon is a ridiculous place to make portraits. Within about an hour of Bend you can go from rimrock canyon to alpine lake to a brick alley downtown.
Rather than a full list of every spot, here is how I help families choose — because the right location depends on your senior, the season and how much daylight we have.
One destination, or a couple of places in town
If you want somewhere iconic — Smith Rock, one of the Cascade Lakes — plan on that being the whole session. Those are roughly 45 minutes out, and the drive plus the walk-in uses the light we'd otherwise spend shooting. One destination, done well.
If you'd rather have variety, we stay in Bend. There are a lot of parks and riverfront spots here, plus brick, murals and alleys downtown, and we can move between two of them easily inside one session.
In-town parks and the river
Bend's parks give us grass, pines, open river bank, footbridges and easy parking. It is the friendliest option if hiking is not your thing, and the light through the trees in the last hour of the day is lovely.
The Old Mill District adds smokestacks, string lights and clean modern texture — a different feel entirely, and a short walk from the water.
Downtown Bend
Brick, murals, doorways and open shade between buildings. This is where a session gets an editorial, city feel, and it pairs well with a park or the river for a second look.
The big destinations
Smith Rock gives you rimrock walls, the Crooked River and golden grass — dramatic and unmistakably Central Oregon. There is a day-use fee and weekday evenings are much calmer than weekends.
The Cascade Lakes give you still water with a mountain behind you. Season matters: the highway is typically snowed in until late spring and closes again in the fall, and mosquitoes are serious in early summer.
Your own place
Some of my favorite sessions have happened at a family's own property — the barn, the truck, the field they have looked at every morning for twenty years. If that is your story, we should shoot there.
How to choose
- One destination out of town, or two spots in Bend — not both.
- Choose a place that means something to you over the one that looks trendiest.
- Match the season: alpine lakes in summer, golden grass in fall, downtown any time.
- Tell me if hiking, heat or crowds are a concern, and I'll steer us accordingly.
